AMR San Joaquin Bike Team
Estabilshed 2002
2007 Bike Team
AMR San Joaquin Bike team has a commitment to community service. In 2002, the Advanced Life Support (ALS) Bicycle Team was established to lend aid and offer quick response to emergencies during community events. The bike team is available to community organizations, events, corporations, concerts and other activities.
Operations
At this time, the team operates in Advanced Life Support (ALS) mode only with ALS certified medics traveling with an EMT. Drugs, fluids, advanced airway, oxygen, defibrillation, and monitoring equipment are carried. Both teams carry a variety of injury treatments. These include bandages, ice packs, and splints. Because the size and weight of the equipment, the bicycle medics must travel in pairs-with one carrying the oxygen and the other carrying the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Since the bikes allow easier and more rapid access to patients at large events, they decrease the amount of time the patients have to go without medical care. Mounted saddlebags carry the equipment.
Training
The Team currently consists of 17 members of which most are trained in urban and rural response areas.
Personnel are trained to ride under punishing conditions. The training includes slow rides, fast rides, up steep inclines, down and along inclines, over curbs, and down stairs. Each medic must be in shape and ready to ride a significant distance at response speed. A short course in maintenance and repair is also part of the training. Use of equipment specific to the bike medics is added as well. Retraining is accomplished on a rotating schedule every six months.
Training for everything and everywhere the public may need aid.
